NGRHS Alumni Association Meeting - Sunday, 29 April 2007

Present at meeting were: Jonathan Crouse, Wendy Looke, Merle Veinot, Glenn DeMone, Shirley Crouse, Merna Cox, Florence Wright, Sylvia MacKay, Bobby Blackadar, Darlene Blackadar, Gloria Feindel, Kim Mayo, Gloria Corkum, Joanne Chaisson, Glenn Carey,Alice Silver, Jessica Spidle, Coline MacDonald

The meeting got under way with Jonathan requesting the minutes of the last meeting. Gloria F. moved that the minutes be adopted as read, seconded by Wendy. Motion carried.

Wendy gave a brief Treasurer's Report indicating that our bank balance at this time is $1640.33. Wendy moved the report be accepted as read, seconded by Gloria F. Motion carried.

Merle gave an update on the Alumni website, indicating that as of this date there have been 6350 visitors to the site. He asked for a copy of the 2006 NGRHS Grad list so that it can be added to site. Wendy has the list and will forward it to Merle.

Glenn D. gave us an update on High School activities and achievements. They are as follows:

  • He encouraged us to read the monthly newsletters on the school website
  • Steve McGill is acting VP while Bill Bruhm is acting Principal in Liverpool until the end of June.
  • Greg Selig was honored provincially for his work on the 'Options and Opportunities Program', a program shaped to individual student needs.
  • Bill Bruhm will be guest speaker at the 2007 graduation on June 28th.
  • May 3, 4, and 5th are the dates of the school drama presentation, 'Larceny and Old Lace'.
  • The tree which was planted on the occasion of our 50th Reunion and since has been destroyed, will not be replaced until we come up with a plan to protect it.
  • Glen asked about the selection process for the Alumni Bursary. When it is located we are to receive a copy to have in our records.

A discussion took place about the upcoming Guppy's Fundraiser on Wednesday, May 16th.

  • We will take advantage of the community billboard, Alice is looking after advertisement on Eastlink and Jonathan will do the same at CKBW.
  • Gloria C. moved we 'axe' the door prizes for this year, seconded by Shirley. Motion carried.
  • Bobby will look after getting a float ready for the Canada Day parade. Basil had e-mailed to say that he was offering his horse and carriage again this year but plans had already been started for an alternate entry because Basil's business had been up for sale. It was moved by Gloria C. and seconded by Merle that we go with Bobby's idea. Motion carried. Appreciation for Basil's offer, and for his past involvement was indicated by all.

Wendy moved and Gloria seconded that we publish a newsletter this Fall to be mailed only to paid-up Alumni members. Motion carried.

A discussion took place on the appropriate response of our committee when an active member or someone who had played a vital role in the past, passed away. It was agreed that the following is appropriate:

  • attend the funeral as an Alumni group if it is feasible
  • card sent on behalf of committee
  • e-mail condolences to funeral home
  • notification on Alumni website

A discussion took place on the possibility of having our Alumni Association receive memorial donations. This will be further discussed at a September meeting.

The discussion on 'Who is an Alumnus?' came up. At the September meeting it will be further discussed and a proposal made if the group wishes. Any changes can be made under Policy and Procedure.

When we meet in September we will discuss forming a committee to spear-head work on memorabilia.

Gloria Corkum, our 2nd VP, will be leaving us for a job in Alberta. We wish her all the best and will miss her. Jessica Spidle was chosen to replace Gloria as 2nd VP.

Jonathan reminded us of Riverfest 2007 to be held August 10-12.

The next meeting is slated for Sunday, Sept. 23 at 7pm (6:45 for Jonathan ?).
